December 09 Dead Space: I don't get it...Even before Dead Space came out I felt that something just wasn’t right about this game. I guess all the hype behind it made sense to some degree however I can’t explain why I wasn’t buying into the hype behind this game. When it comes to games that I love to play shooters and the survival horror games are always my go-to’s. So how is it possible that I don’t like Dead Space?
While everyone I know in gaming seems to putting this at the top their list for 2008 I have problems placing it anywhere on any list. I didn’t buy the game when it came out, in fact I waited a while to even place it in my que on GameFly. So when I saw that it had shipped I was excited, in hindsight I was overly excited. I don’t see anything that this game did that makes it stand out.
The game looks pretty, I’ll give it that, but outside of that I couldn’t find much redeemable in this title. The story wasn’t at all original and it seemed like they tried to put way too much into while giving you the option to completely bypass it as well. HUH? That made no sense to me either but that’s what they did. Let’s get right to it, it was the overall gameplay that killed this game for me. Basically what you do in this game on each level is go from point A to B, then from C to A, then from D to B, then back to A and you’re done. Mixed in-between there are shooting generic monsters/mutants/aliens. Maybe because I quit the game rather than finish it I missed something, but if there’s something that great about it then why wait so long to mix that in?
I did enjoy the zero-g sections of the game but even that was lacking. It was too hard to get my bearings and look around where I wanted to. Maybe that’s just me being stupid and not liking a game because it’s hard but there wasn’t a cohesiveness to these sections of the game. Also it felt like they just threw them in at random because they had this cool idea but didn’t know where or how to really integrate it.
If I happened to miss something by not finishing the game feel free to let me know, I can always rent it again. Or if there is something that this game does well or better than any other title out there the by all means “show me the way”. Otherwise I’ll continue being happy that I sent it back to GameFly and anxiously await the arrival of “Secret Service”.
